Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), party executives, Members of Parliament, civil society actors and other participants today took to the streets in the “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, calling for the protection of Ghana’s democratic institutions, constitutional governance and the rule of law.
The demonstration attracted large crowds as participants marched through the principal streets carrying placards with messages advocating justice, accountability, freedom of expression and the independence of the Judiciary.
Dressed predominantly in party colours, the demonstrators chanted patriotic songs and slogans while calling on authorities to uphold democratic principles and protect the constitutional rights of all citizens.
The protest follows growing concerns raised by organisers over issues they believe threaten democratic governance, including the protection of civil liberties, judicial independence and equal application of the law. The organisers have maintained that the demonstration is intended to draw national attention to what they describe as critical issues affecting Ghana’s democracy.
Security personnel were deployed along the demonstration route to maintain law and order, while organisers repeatedly urged participants to remain peaceful and conduct themselves responsibly throughout the march.
The event brought together a cross-section of political leaders, party supporters, youth groups and sympathisers, many of whom displayed banners and placards expressing their views on governance, accountability and constitutionalism.
