Independent candidate to contest Yendi parliamentary seat, promises to work with NPP

An independent parliamentary candidate, Abdul Karim Hussein, has filed his nomination forms to contest the upcoming elections in the Yendi constituency of the Northern region.

Mr. Hussein, who is from the camp of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), promised to work with the party after winning the seat on December 7.

His decision to contest as an independent candidate comes after the NPP’s national executive council (NEC) declared the incumbent MP, Alhaji Faruk Aliu Mahama, as the party’s candidate for the constituency, despite opposition from some youth groups.

The youth groups had threatened to vote against the party if the primary was not re-conducted, but their warnings were ignored by the NEC.

Mr. Hussein, affectionately called “The Savior” by the youth in Yendi, said he is contesting to unite the party, which he claimed has been disunited by the incumbent MP.

He expressed confidence in winning the seat, saying the people of Yendi are waiting for December 7 to elect him as their MP.

The Yendi Municipal EC has certified Mr. Hussein’s nomination forms, paving the way for his candidacy.

However, some NPP elders and sympathizers have expressed fears that Mr. Hussein’s candidacy could lead to a repeat of the 2004 scenario, where an independent candidate caused the defeat of the party’s candidate.

Some NPP youth members have vowed to vote for Mr. Hussein to send a message to the national party executives, while others have expressed dissatisfaction with the incumbent MP’s performance.
