Inflation rises to 5% in August after July’s 4.6%

Ghana’s year-on-year inflation rate increased to 5.0% in August 2026, up from 4.6% in July, according to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The latest figure represents a 0.4 percentage-point increase over the previous month, although inflation remains significantly lower than the 11.5% recorded in August 2025.

Despite the annual increase, prices actually fell by 1.0% between July and August, marking a reversal from the 0.1% month-on-month increase recorded in July.

The GSS data also show a clear difference between food and non-food prices.

Food inflation eased slightly to 3.0% in August, from 3.1% in July, while non-food inflation climbed to 6.8%, compared with 6.1% in the previous month.

Services continued to record particularly strong price pressures, with services inflation reaching 8.6%, compared with 8.5% in July.

Goods inflation, meanwhile, rose from 3.4% to 3.8%.

According to the GSS, non-food items accounted for 70.9% of total inflation in August, while food contributed 29.1%.

The overall Consumer Price Index stood at 268.5 in August 2026, compared with 255.7 in August 2025.

The latest figures mean inflation has now fallen by more than half over the past year, from 11.5% in August 2025 to 5.0% in August 2026. However, the August increase means the downward trend recorded earlier in the year has not continued uninterrupted.

The GSS says households should take advantage of the slower pace of price increases to plan and budget, while paying particular attention to service-related costs such as transport, rent and school fees, which continue to record relatively high inflation.
