A police inspector stationed at Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region has been arrested over allegations that he and his accomplices robbed more than eight mobile money vendors in Kumasi and nearby areas.
Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah is accused of carrying out a series of armed robberies targeting vendors and cash operators.
In one of the incidents, the inspector allegedly left his mobile phone on a victim’s counter after the robbery. According to reports, he later went to the Adiebeba Police Station before the victim arrived and reported that his phone had been stolen, asking officers to help track it.
The victim later arrived at the same station to report the robbery and identified the phone as belonging to the suspect.
Speaking to Crime Check, Victoria Arkoh, the latest complainant, said the inspector robbed her of GH¢38,600 at gunpoint.
She said the incident left her traumatised and terrified.
“I was so frightened that I urinated on myself and even soaked my one year old baby,” she said.
Ms Arkoh said she later reported the case at the Kumasi Central Police Station, where she was informed that several other mobile money vendors had lodged similar complaints against the same suspect.
Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah has since been arrested together with three alleged accomplices, including another police officer and two civilians.
The four suspects have been remanded into custody while investigations continue.
