Tensions flared in the Asante Mampong Constituency on Thursday, April 10, as a group of irate National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters stormed the party’s constituency office, vandalizing property and setting items ablaze in a dramatic protest.
The aggrieved youth, believed to be aligned with various factions within the party, expressed strong displeasure over circulating reports that Esther Dwomoh had been nominated as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). According to the protestors, the rumoured nomination is unacceptable, especially when no official communication has been made by the Presidency.
They insist that the shortlist for the MCE position following the vetting included only three individuals: the 2024 NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the area, Yakubu Yakubu; the current Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Kamil; and party member Imoro Iddrisu. The youth argue that one of these vetted individuals should rightfully be chosen.
The protest quickly escalated into violence, with supporters damaging property and setting chairs and tables ablaze at the forecourt of the party office.
Police were called to the scene to restore order, though no arrests have been reported as of Friday morning. Fire officers were also dispatched and succeeded in putting out the fire before it could cause more extensive damage.
Speaking to the media, the Constituency Communications Officer for the NDC, Kwaku Bernasko, confirmed the incident and acknowledged the growing unrest within the party’s local ranks.
“It’s a group of youth agitating about a rumour that the Mampong MCE nominee is a lady called Esther Dwomoh,” Bernasko said. “They came to the party office to express their displeasure, and we couldn’t control the crowd. Party properties like chairs and tables were broken and burned.”
As of now, the Presidency has not issued any official statement regarding the MCE nomination for the area.
The incident raises serious concerns about internal party cohesion in the lead-up to the 2024 elections and highlights growing frustrations among grassroots members about decision-making transparency.
