Irate youth chase galamseyes from site in Akyem Asuom

Angry youth of Akyem Asuom in the Kwaebibirem municipality of the Eastern Region have taken matters into their own hands, storming five illegal mining sites and stopping all activities.

The youth claim the illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers, have polluted all water bodies, crops, and farmlands in the community, despite repeated warnings to halt their operations.

According to the youth, the mining companies involved hold only prospecting licenses, which do not permit them to mine.

However, they have continued to mine without any authority stopping them.

The youth have called on the government to urgently halt the unlawful activities of the galamseyers, warning that failure to do so will force them to find their own solution, which may lead to the forceful eviction of the miners.

The Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III, has backed the youth’s call, confirming that the galamsey activities have caused significant destruction to the community’s water bodies and farm lands.
