It is rude, unlawful to touch funds of pensioners — Sophia Akuffo

Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has frowned on the government for including pensioners in the controversial domestic debts exchange programme.

The former Chief Justice joined pensioners to picket at the Finance Ministry against the government for holding on to pensioners funds.

“If there is the need to restructure debt, they should prove it to us and show us why this is the only solution and in any case, this is an unlawful solution” she said.

“There was no clause that said that when the government goes bankrupt, it should not pay its employers,” the former Chief Justice added

The government has suggested a coupon rate of 15%, but the group has said it will not accept any investment reductions.

The group claims that because its members’ livelihoods depend on the revenues, it will not take haircuts on investments.

Some group members have said they purchase their medications and other supplies, much like the former Chief Justice.

“We have earned complete exemption, and we deserve it.

The pensioner bondholders said on Day 4 of their picketing on Thursday, 9 February, “Total exemption.”
