President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has called out the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for spreading false claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) plans to cancel the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme if voted into power.
The think tank boss in a Facebook post emphasized that the NDC and other parties aim to address the challenges plaguing the program, not scrap it entirely.
His comments come amidst claims by some NPP faithful, including vice presidential candidate Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s assertions that the NDC would cancel Free SHS.
However, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC’s running mate, has reassured Ghanaians that her party has no intention of cancelling the program.
Instead, they plan to improve it by tackling the challenges faced by students, teachers, and schools.
According to her, the NDC’s plans for Free SHS improvement focus on investing in classroom and boarding infrastructure to remove the double track system, providing teaching and learning materials for schools, and ensuring adequate supply of food for students.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who previously served as Minister of Education, highlighted the NDC’s investment in building Community Day Schools and initiating Progressively Free SHS.
The Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy was introduced in 2017 by President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, aiming to make secondary education accessible to all.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on access, equity, and equality in education.
