President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has slammed the payment of ex-gratia to political appointees in the Nana Addo government, describing it as unfair.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, March 11, the think tank boss wondered what the country is rewarding despite their abysmal performance.
“It is unfair to pay stupendous benefits, the so-called ex-gratia to political appointees in the Nana Addo government. What are we rewarding really? This shambolic performance?” he questioned in a post on Facebook.
Franklin Cudjoe argued that instead of paying these appointees, the government should impose a 95% direct tax on their emoluments and use the proceeds to subsidize school feeding in public primary schools.
“I still maintain that the new Finance Minister imposes a 95% direct tax on needless emoluments. Proceeds should be used to subsidize school feeding in public primary schools,” he proposed.
Additionally, Mr. Cudjoe suggested that the remaining 5% should be delayed over five years.
He also touched on the challenges facing the school feeding program, citing poorly cooked meals and fights over payments among cooks.
Mr. Cudjoe proposed a voucher system, where pupils would be given GHS 2 daily allowances to buy food from vendors of their choice.
“By the way, this school feeding by the state…can be stopped if the daily allowance of the proposed GHS 2 per pupil can be converted into vouchers for pupils to buy food from any vendor, private or school selected,” he suggested.
