Janet Nabla Accuses Govt of Undermining Cocoa Industry to Benefit Galamsey Operators

Janet Asana Nabla, the Founder and Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), has launched a strong critique of the government’s decision to slash the price of cocoa per bag from GH¢3,625 to GH¢2,587.

In a post on her Facebook wall, Nabla expressed her concern that the reduction in cocoa prices is a deliberate move to destabilize the cocoa industry.

“The government’s plan is to disgrace cocoa production so that farmers will have no choice but to sell their farmlands to Galamsey operators,” Nabla stated, alleging that the price cut will push cocoa farmers into financial distress and force them to sell their lands to illegal mining operators (Galamsey).

Nabla’s comments come amidst growing discontent from cocoa farmers who have long voiced concerns over increasing costs of production and dwindling returns.

The PNP Chairperson’s remarks highlight the potential ripple effects on Ghana’s agricultural sector, particularly on the livelihoods of cocoa farmers, many of whom depend heavily on the crop as their primary source of income.

This latest development adds fuel to ongoing discussions about the future of Ghana’s cocoa industry, which remains one of the country’s key economic pillars. While the government defends the price adjustment as a necessary step to ensure sustainability in the global cocoa market, critics, including Nabla, argue that such a move could lead to an irreversible decline in the industry.
