The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for the immediate dismissal of Jean Mensa and the entire leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing them of gross mismanagement and incompetence.

Speaking during an interview on Joy News on Wednesday, June 25, Asiedu Nketia asserted that the EC, under its current leadership, has repeatedly failed in its constitutional duty to conduct credible and transparent elections in Ghana.

“There has to be a change,” he said emphatically. “The three top leadership must all go. They have managed the Commission so badly.”

The NDC chair specifically referenced the unresolved parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, criticizing the EC for allowing a situation that has resulted in an electoral stalemate—something he claims is not contemplated under Ghana’s laws.

“You cannot still be having an election that will go into a stalemate. There is no anticipation of any stalemate in our laws unless people don’t want to do their work well,” he added. “It’s a clear case of negligence or inability to perform its functions.”

Asiedu Nketia further cited the disenfranchisement of the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) constituency in the 2020 general elections as the beginning of what he described as a pattern of electoral malpractice under Jean Mensa’s tenure.

“Six months on after the election, and we still don’t have an elected MP. That must tell you something is wrong,” he said. “This Commission, as presently constituted, took over the reins and they have never done a satisfactory election.”

He also referenced controversies surrounding the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, describing it as another incident that exposed the Commission’s inability to uphold the democratic process.

Asiedu Nketia stressed that Ghana’s electoral body needs urgent structural reform to restore public confidence and ensure future elections are free, fair, and credible.

“The EC must be fundamentally restructured. We cannot continue with this level of dysfunction if we want to protect our democracy,” he said.
