JERAG International condemns military brutality in West Mamprusi Municipal

JERAG International has condemned the reported acts of military brutality in some communities within the West Mamprusi Municipal, resulting in the tragic deaths of two innocent civilians.

The victims, Mr. Imoro Hafiz, 36, from Loari and Alhaji Sumaila Bawa, 53, from Walewale, lost their lives due to the use of excessive force by security personnel against unarmed citizens.

According to reliable reports, military personnel entered the communities following the burning of a commercial vehicle by unknown persons on February 10, 2025.

Instead of conducting professional investigations, they resorted to indiscriminate violence against innocent civilians.

JERAG International’s investigation reveals a disturbing pattern of similar acts of arson and violence along the Bawku-Bolgatanga-Pulmakom road in the Bawku Traditional Area between 2021 and 2023.

The organization reminds the Ghana Armed Forces that their actions in these communities violate key provisions of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, including the prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment, and the protection of the right to life.

Demands for Accountability

JERAG International is calling on the North-East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to undertake the following:

  1. Conduct an immediate and independent investigation_ into the conduct of the military personnel involved in the brutalities, ensuring full transparency and accountability.
  2. Ensure justice for the victims and their families_, including compensation and necessary legal redress.
  3. Review security operations in the area_ to ensure that responses to criminal activities are intelligence-led and do not victimize innocent civilians.
  4. Prioritize dialogue, community engagement, and professional policing methods_ over brute force in addressing security concerns.

“We urge all stakeholders, including civil society, traditional authorities, and the government, to work toward a lasting and just resolution to the security challenges affecting Walewale, Bawku, and surrounding areas,” Abu Tia Jambeidu, PhD, Executive Director of JERAG International said.
