Jinapor challenges African Petroleum CEOs to expand electricity access

Minister of Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor has challenged African petroleum CEOs to invest more in energy generation capacity in order to make electricity more affordable for millions across the continent.

Speaking in Accra at the 7th African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) and National Oil Companies CEOs Summit, hosted by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Jinapor said Africa cannot afford to waste its vast hydrocarbon reserves, especially gas, which could transform access to power.

“Africa must leverage its natural resources not only to power industries but also to ensure ordinary citizens have access to affordable energy,” he emphasized, calling for stronger collaboration among national oil companies.

The summit brought together executives and policymakers from 19 oil-producing nations to explore strategies for tackling the region’s energy challenges, including outdated infrastructure and inadequate investment.

APPO Secretary General Omar Farouk Ibrahim stressed the importance of developing homegrown technologies to drive innovation in the oil and gas sector. GNPC Chief Executive Officer Kwame Ntow Amoah also highlighted the upcoming Africa Energy Bank as a potential “game changer” in mobilizing funds for Africa’s energy transition.

The summit, part of the build-up to the 2025 Africa Oil Week, is expected to shape conversations around regional collaboration, renewable integration, and energy security.
