John Boadu beats Agyarko, Afoko to become NPP National Chairman

John Boadu has returned to the top ranks of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), winning the party’s National Chairmanship election at its delegates conference in Kumasi.

The former General Secretary secured 2,888 votes in Saturday’s election at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, defeating former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and former National Chairman Paul Afoko.

Mr Agyarko polled 2,048 votes, while Mr Afoko obtained 490 votes.

The result triggered celebrations among his supporters at the congress grounds as they gathered to mark his victory.

The 56-year-old politician was among four contenders for the chairmanship position. The other candidate was former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe.

Mr Boadu’s victory followed a late development in the race, after Sammy Crabbe announced on Saturday that he would back him and asked his supporters to vote for the former General Secretary.

The chairmanship contest was part of the election of nine national officers at the NPP conference, which brought together more than 7,000 delegates.

The party also approved proposed amendments to its constitution, including changes concerning the role of the party leader while the NPP is in opposition.

Mr Boadu served as NPP General Secretary between 2018 and 2022.

His election places him at the centre of the party’s efforts to reorganise its structures and prepare for the 2028 general elections.
