Joseph Commey and Abigail Quartey honoured at Boxing Ghana Awards 2024

The 3rd edition of the Boxing Ghana Awards, held at the Idrowhyt Events Centre on Saturday, celebrated excellence in Ghanaian boxing. The event recognized athletes and stakeholders who have made significant contributions to the sport in 2024, with Joseph Commey and Abigail Quartey emerging as the biggest winners of the night.

Joseph Commey, popularly known as “Jaguar,” had an exceptional year, earning him the title of Boxing Personality of the Year 2024. As the UBO Africa Lightweight Champion and Gold Medalist at the African Games, Commey’s accomplishments in the ring were unmatched.

In addition to his top award, he was also named Best Elite Amateur Boxer and Most Promising Boxer, confirming his position as one of the brightest prospects in Ghanaian boxing.

Abigail Quartey, the current WIBF Super Bantamweight Champion, was named Best Female Boxer for her outstanding performances throughout the year. At 28 years old, Quartey’s skill and determination have made her a leading figure in Ghanaian women’s boxing, earning her recognition on both national and international stages.

A Night to Celebrate Boxing Excellence
Organized by Boxing Ghana, aimed to honor the contributions of individuals and organizations driving the growth of boxing in the country.

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah a.k.a HRH Nii Kojo Ashiefie Papanyira I, the development Chief of the Ga state applauded the organizers for their efforts to highlight boxing’s importance in Ghana’s sporting history.

In his remarks, Mr. Nunoo Mensah emphasized that boxing has been Ghana’s most successful sport, bringing the nation numerous medals and global recognition. He called for greater corporate sponsorship to expand the scope and impact of the awards in future editions.

The Special Guest of Honour, Nii Dr. Adotey Dzata I, former President of Ghana Kickboxing, encouraged the athletes to remain committed to their training and embrace their roles as stars and role models for the next generation.

Similarly,  Alfred Kotey Ashie, Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo constituency, commended the winners and urged them to aim for world titles, emphasizing the need to elevate Ghanaian boxing to a higher global standard.

The Boxing Ghana Awards 2024 highlighted the incredible talent and potential within the sport, with athletes like Joseph Commey and Abigail Quartey paving the way for Ghana to achieve even greater success on the international stage.
