A group calling itself Journalists Against LGBTQ+ Ghana has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to assent to the Anti-LGBTQ+ Act without delay.
This call comes after the Supreme Court dismissed Richard Dela Sky’s petition challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
In a statement signed by the convenor Isaac Boamah Darko, the group said Supreme Court’s ruling has cleared the way for President Akufo-Addo’s assent, given his previous statement that he would sign the bill if the majority of Ghanaians wanted him to do so.
“The Anti-LGBTQ+ Act aims to promote proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, a crucial step towards upholding the moral fabric of our society,” the group stated.
The group commended the Supreme Court for its “wise decision” and urged President Akufo-Addo to follow suit by assenting to the bill.
“We hope President Akufo-Addo will take prompt action to assent to the bill, ensuring our nation continues to uphold the highest moral standards,” the group added.
The Anti-LGBTQ+ Act has been met with opposition from various human rights groups, who argue that it promotes discrimination and violates human rights.
