Kasoa building collapse: Fire Service rescues trapped worker after two-hour operation

A construction worker trapped under a collapsed building at Kasoa New Market in the Central Region has been rescued after a two-hour operation led by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The incident occurred when the front section of a residential building undergoing renovation suddenly gave way, trapping one of the masons working on the site. Two others managed to escape unhurt.

According to eyewitnesses, the building owner, identified as Mr. Ali Charles, had engaged three masons to strengthen portions of the structure after detecting visible cracks on the walls.

A team of fire officers, supported by paramedics and officials of the National Ambulance Service, arrived promptly at the scene.

The rescue team carefully cleared the debris to reach the victim, who was pinned beneath the rubble.

During the operation, emergency medical personnel intermittently administered pain relief and first aid to keep the trapped worker stable until he was freed.

The victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, sustained a serious leg injury and was initially sent to the Kasoa Polyclinic for treatment before being referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for further medical attention.

Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Mr. Seth Sabah Serwonoo Banini, commended the swift and professional response of the rescue teams.

“We are thankful to God and to the Fire and Ambulance Services for their timely intervention. A medical team was also on standby at the Polyclinic to receive the victim immediately after his rescue,” he stated.

The Awutu Senya East Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with the Works and Engineering Department of the Assembly, has begun investigations to ascertain the cause of the collapse.

Meanwhile, the affected building has been cordoned off, and all occupants have been evacuated as a safety precaution.
