Minister for Finance Mohammed Amin Adam has clarified that the redesigning and expansion of the Kasoa-Winneba Highway is being funded by the Ghana government, contrary to assertions by a section of the populace that it is an ECOWAS-sponsored project.
According to the project’s scope, flyovers will be constructed at Sapato Junction to link the Western bypass, Big Apple in Buduburam, Awutu Breku, and Akoti Junction to allow easy vehicular traffic flow. The project will also cater for the finalization of the road.
Currently, work on lot one of the project which stretches from Sapato to Akoti Junction, according to the contractor, is 42 percent complete as he attributes the delay to a heavy underground rock encountered at the site where an interchange will be constructed at Buduburam.
According to engineers working on the second phase of the project thus the Akoti-Winneba has been slowed down a bit as a result of some buildings that are still situated within the project zone since their owners have not been fully compensated and some fully compensated owners begging for additional time to relocate. Utility lines that are yet to be relocated are also contributing to the delay.
Addressing journalists during a tour of the project site by the Minister of Roads and Highways and the Minister of Finance, Mohammed Amin Adam the Finance Minister clarified that the project is funded by the government of Ghana, contrary to claims by some persons that the road was being constructed by the ECOWAS.
He said the government has placed a special focus on improving the road infrastructure that links Ghana to neighboring countries while also building the capacity of local contractors to undertake such projects.
Meanwhile, Roads and Highways Minister Asenso Boakye expressed satisfaction with the progress of work so far, and also pledged to have the safety related issues raised by residents and road users looked into.
Also, he said the government is considering extending the dualizatjon project through to Cape Coast and Takoradi to further enhance tourism and economic activities in the Central and Western Regions.
Apart from the construction of new roads, the minister also said the government is taking serious action in rehabilitating existing ones.
