KEEA targets zero maternal deaths, launches Network of Practice

The Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) Municipal Health Directorate has launched a Network of Practice (NoP) aimed at achieving universal health coverage and reducing maternal mortality to zero.

Speaking at the launch, Acting Regional Health Director, Dr. Agnes Anane, emphasized the commitment of healthcare providers to attaining a zero maternal and infant mortality rate.

She urged healthcare providers to exercise professionalism, prioritize patient needs, and establish strong working relationships to improve healthcare delivery.

The NoP seeks to maximize efficiencies by connecting public and private facilities in a specified geographic area.

Model health centers will serve as hubs, while lower-level facilities like CHPS Compounds will serve as spokes.

KEEA Director of Health Services, Martin Sumani Daanko, explained that resources and logistics will be shared among facilities under the NoP to enhance quality healthcare delivery.

Municipal Chief Executive, Ebo Appiah, assured that the local government is committed to providing quality infrastructure to facilitate healthcare delivery, including the construction of a polyclinic and other health facilities.

The move comes after the municipality recorded two maternal deaths in 2023 and one incident in the first half of 2024, despite efforts to achieve zero maternal deaths.

Unskilled delivery and preference for home or prayer camp deliveries remain significant contributors to maternal mortality in the area.

According to the 2023 records, skilled delivery reduced from 52% to 45% in the first half of 2024, sparking concern among stakeholders in the health sector.

Dr. Anane reiterated the need for healthcare providers to work together to achieve the desired results.

The launch of the NoP is a step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.
