Kejetia Market Fire: We must prioritize resourcing the Fire Service — Dr. Kingsley Nyarko

I is not surprising to see fire gutting major markets in Ghana, running businesses to their feet as well as leaving the economy in a detestable state.

Every year the country faces fire outbreaks which is almost always expected. But, in all these years, the country seems to be doing little to nothing to tackle the issue.

The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso constituency, Kingsley Nyarko has applauded the Ghana National Fire Service for their timely intervention to douse the fire but gutted several stales at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi.

The legislator thinks this is a good time for the country to prioritize equipping the Service.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on March 16, Mr. Nyarko indicated that the degree of damage extended to the newly built Kejetia Market would not have been this weighty if the GNFS were thoroughly equipped, citing that, modern architecture goes in hand with advanced disaster response technology.

“We need to resource our fire service, we need to up our game on that.”

But, he also blamed how shops are earmarked, suggesting that combustible materials are not supposed to come close to items capable of starting a fire.

He advised that such combustible materials should have separate segments or at best be isolated from anything capable of sparking it.

Professing constant routine checks as a possible solution, he also suggested that edifices such as the Kejetia market should be manned by firefighters all the time to avert or suspend circumstances such as this in the future.

He added that victims of this devastating situation should be offered psychological assistance to detraumatise them.

Scenes from the fire at the Kejetia Market recorded no death or casualties but a great number of fortunes and capitals were burnt to ashes.
