Minority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has publicly reaffirmed his close relationship with businessman and politician Kennedy Agyapong, revealing that Agyapong once gave him $5 million to support his struggling business without any paperwork or conditions.
Speaking in the wake of the New Patriotic Party presidential primary, Afenyo-Markin addressed questions about Agyapong’s performance in his constituency. Kennedy Agyapong polled 644 votes in the contest, while Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secured 79 votes.
The results sparked debate among some supporters, who suggested that although Afenyo Markin did not openly campaign for Agyapong, he may have influenced the outcome in Effutu.
Responding to the speculation on Channel One TV, Afenyo-Markin said his relationship with Agyapong goes back many years and is rooted in trust and personal support.
He recounted a period when his business was facing serious financial difficulties and said Agyapong stepped in with 5 million dollars to help him recover.
According to him, there was no formal agreement and no probing questions.
“He gave me the money without paperwork and without asking me questions,” Afenyo-Markin said, describing the gesture as a defining moment in their friendship.
He explained that Agyapong’s strong showing in Effutu did not come as a surprise. Over the years, he said, several initiatives and forms of support had been extended to constituents, contributing to goodwill and loyalty within the area.
Afenyo-Markin also disclosed plans to construct an ICT facility in honour of Kennedy Agyapong, a project he said was conceived five years ago. The facility, he noted, reflects their continued collaboration and mutual respect beyond internal party politics.
His remarks appear to settle speculation about any distance between the two men, underscoring a relationship shaped as much by personal history as by political alignment.
