Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, has confirmed that the Ghanaian government secured a loan of 20 million cedis to support the ongoing 2025/26 season of the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

This financial investment is aimed at boosting the league’s competitiveness and visibility as it continues to grow in prominence.

Speaking on Peace FM, Kofi Adams revealed that the government’s involvement was critical in ensuring the success of the current season. He stated, “We took a loan of 20 million cedis from the bank as an investment into the Ghana Premier League. We are also collaborating with corporate institutions to ensure the loan is paid back in due time.”

Before the start of the 2025/26 season, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced that each Premier League club would receive 1 million cedis to aid their preparations. At that time, there was speculation about the government’s involvement, but the GFA had denied any direct financial contribution. Kofi Adams’ recent comments now confirm the government’s substantial financial role in strengthening the domestic league.

This loan is part of a broader effort to enhance the standard of play in the Ghana Premier League. The government’s strategic investment in football infrastructure and club support aims to elevate the league’s competitiveness, making it more attractive to fans, sponsors, and international broadcasters. In recent years, the Ghana Premier League has seen a rise in viewership, with increasing interest both locally and internationally.

With a goal of paying back the loan through partnerships with corporate sponsors, the Ministry of Youth and Sports is optimistic about the league’s future financial sustainability. The loan is expected to have long-term benefits, not only for the league but also for Ghanaian football as a whole.
