Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has been released eight days after he was arrested.
Mr. Akpaloo was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at his Kumasi residence in a dawn operation on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, over allegations of financial crimes.
He is being investigated for fraud, causing financial loss to the state, dissipation of public funds, and money laundering.
Akpaloo was granted police bail with conditions, including a GH¢10 million bond with two sureties to be justified.
However, he remained in custody until today, unable to meet the bail conditions.
His release was greeted by rapturous cheers from friends and family who had traveled to welcome him home..
Kofi Akpaloo told journalists in Accra after his release on Thursday, September 11, 2025, that his arrest was politically motivated.
“They [EOCO] say they are conducting investigations. But it is politics as usual. My arrest and detention was due to my recent utterances about the government,” Kofi Akpaloo told reporters.
