Kofi Tonto blasts Prof. Frimpong Boateng over fake NPP claim

A member of the New Patriotic Party Communications Team, Kofi Tonto, has strongly criticised former Environment Minister, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng over comments describing the NPP as fake.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme with host Moro Awudu, Mr Tonto accused Prof Frimpong Boateng of making destructive and personal attacks against former President Nana Akufo-Addo instead of offering constructive criticism.

Mr Tonto questioned Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s public suggestion that he would have been a better president than Akufo-Addo, describing it as disrespectful and inappropriate for a former subordinate.

He said several figures in the party, including Bryan Acheampong and Yaw Osei Adutwum, were supported and elevated by former President Akufo-Addo, despite their strong personalities and independent thinking.

According to Mr Tonto, Bryan Acheampong served twice as a minister, overseeing agriculture and national security, sectors he said accounted for about 40 percent of the economy, while Yaw Adutwum was brought from the United States to serve in government.

He argued that Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s criticism was driven by personal ambition, insisting the former minister had openly admitted in an interview that he believed he would have performed better as president.

Mr Tonto said it was troubling for a leader to publicly suggest he was superior to his boss while still serving under him, adding that such statements raised questions about Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s conduct during cabinet meetings.

“Imagine leading an institution and a subordinate sitting in meetings believing he is better than you,” Mr Tonto said. “You then go on national television to suggest that openly.”

He added that the NPP was justified in interrogating Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s comments, rather than treating them as harmless criticism.

Mr Tonto also rejected claims that the party rushed into another election without reflecting after its defeat, describing the assertion as false and misleading.

He said while internal debate was healthy, public attacks that undermined party unity and leadership were unacceptable.
