Kofi Tonto, an aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has questioned what he describes as the silence of government and state institutions over the detention of Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Mr. Tonto expressed concern that an elected lawmaker who is paid through taxpayers’ money has remained in detention abroad without what he considers sufficient public communication about the situation
“An MP that we pay with our taxes has been detained in a foreign country. Two months now and we don’t know what’s going on. Our Speaker of Parliament is quiet. The Party he caucuses with is quiet. CSOs are quiet. Media is quiet,” he wrote.
According to Mr. Tonto, he does not understand why the government of President John Mahama has not provided updates on the matter or explained the circumstances surrounding the MP’s detention.
The concerns follow reports that Ohene Kwame Frimpong was arrested by Dutch security officials at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam after arriving on a KLM flight from Accra.
Reports surrounding the arrest linked the case to allegations involving romance scams and money laundering. The allegations are subject to legal proceedings, and the MP’s position on the claims will be determined through the judicial process.
Following developments in the case, the MP was reportedly extradited by the United Kingdom authorities to face trial.
