Founder and CEO of the Atta-Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho, has expressed concern over the government’s failure to act on its promise to rename the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho after the late President John Evans Atta-Mills.
Mr. Anyidoho reminded the public of an announcement made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu on May 28, 2025, during the inauguration of UHAS’s new Governing Council. The Minister stated that the institution would be renamed the Professor John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences, in recognition of the former president’s pivotal role in its establishment.
“President Mills envisioned UHAS, cut the sod, and started its establishment. The current government made a public promise to rename the university in his honour, but months have passed with no concrete action. We are only asking—what processes are being followed?” Anyidoho said.
He noted that the late President’s contributions to Ghana’s health and education sectors are undeniable and deserve more than just verbal commitments.
“It’s a matter of public interest. The government must show transparency and provide clear timelines on when and how this renaming will be executed. The legacy of President Atta-Mills should not be subject to delay or politicization.”
Mr. Anyidoho emphasized that the call is not political but driven by a national interest to preserve the memory of a leader who prioritized human development through health and education.
“We are only calling on the government to keep its word. Nothing more. We hope and pray that what they promised shall be fulfilled.”
