Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has asked musician Mzbel to provide more information to help investigate claims that her relative died after allegedly being unable to get a hospital bed.
The hospital said it had taken notice of a video circulating on social media in which Mzbel suggested her relative lost their life because there was no bed available at the facility.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the management of Korle Bu said it was treating the allegation with the seriousness it deserved and had been trying to contact Mzbel and her family to establish exactly what happened.
According to the hospital, it is seeking to determine whether the patient was referred to Korle Bu but was denied admission on arrival, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred and had instead been advised to wait until a bed became available.
The hospital said it had so far been unable to speak directly with the family and appealed to Mzbel to provide details that would support a full investigation into the claims made in her video.
Korle Bu stressed that it operates under the government’s directive that no public hospital should refuse emergency cases. It said the policy, announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address and reinforced by the Minister for Health, remains in force.
Management said the hospital’s board had also procured additional beds and other equipment to reduce pressure caused by bed shortages. It added that all clinical and emergency departments had been repeatedly reminded of their duty to provide emergency care in line with national policy.
The hospital said any deliberate refusal to treat an emergency patient would amount to a serious breach of policy and would be investigated thoroughly.
Korle Bu also urged patients and their families to use its official complaints channels, including its telephone lines, website complaints portal and QR codes displayed across the hospital, to report concerns so they can be investigated promptly.
The hospital extended its condolences to the bereaved family and said it remained committed to conducting a fair, transparent and professional investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
