Four patients have become the first beneficiaries of treatment at the newly commissioned Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab) at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, marking a major step forward in specialised heart care in Ghana.
Working alongside specialists from Mount Carmel Hospital in Ohio, United States, doctors at the National Cardiothoracic Centre successfully carried out four advanced cardiac procedures. These included the implantation of dual chamber pacemakers, conduction system pacing devices, implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices.
The successful procedures marked the operational debut of the state-of-the-art Cath Lab, which is expected to improve access to advanced heart treatments and reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for specialised care.
The National Cardiothoracic Centre expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and other stakeholders whose support made the installation and commissioning of the facility possible.
The centre described the new laboratory as a significant investment in Ghana’s healthcare system that will strengthen the country’s capacity to diagnose and treat complex heart conditions while improving outcomes for patients.
