National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reconsider any plans to seek a review of the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Kpandai parliamentary election dispute.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday, January 28, overturned a decision by the Tamale High Court which had annulled the parliamentary election results in the Kpandai Constituency of the Northern Region. The apex court’s ruling effectively stopped the Electoral Commission from proceeding with a planned rerun of the election.
Following the judgment, Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, disclosed that the NDC was considering applying for a review of the ruling once the certified copy of the judgment becomes available.
However, speaking on Channel One TV, Mr Vanderpuye cautioned against such a move, arguing that returning to court without a strong legal basis would be a fruitless and stressful exercise for the party. He described the idea of a review as a waste of limited time and resources.
According to him, pursuing another legal battle would place unnecessary pressure on party leadership, lawyers, and Members of Parliament, many of whom would have to abandon their parliamentary responsibilities to follow the case.
“If he goes to court again, everybody, the lawyers, the party, me, and all of us, will be there again. The Minority will also be there. They will leave their work in Parliament to support Nyindam. All of us will be stressed, and I think it’s a total waste of resources,” Mr Vanderpuye stated.
He further suggested a political solution to ease tensions, proposing that the President consider offering an appointment to the NDC’s Kpandai parliamentary candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal. Mr Vanderpuye said such a move would help bring closure to the matter and allow the party to move forward.
