Kwabena Agyepong Slams OSP Over Ken Ofori-Atta Probe, Calls Actions “PR Stunt”

Former General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has strongly criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over its handling of investigations involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

In a hard-hitting statement, Agyepong questioned the OSP’s legal and ethical approach, accusing it of conducting a “public and media trial” instead of following due process. According to him, no formal charges have been filed against Mr. Ofori-Atta, making him neither an accused person nor a fugitive under the law.

“If the OSP has what he claims to have, why hasn’t he charged Ken and initiated prosecution in a court of competent jurisdiction?” Agyepong asked. “People have been tried in absentia before. Does he need Ken’s physical presence to do his job?”

The former party executive argued that only a court can declare someone a fugitive, and not the Special Prosecutor. He further criticized what he described as the OSP’s attempt to gain public sympathy and justify the relevance of his office.

“This is clearly a PR stunt to justify himself in an office that should never have been set up in the first place — a worthless drain on our overstretched public purse,” Agyepong said. He suggested that Ken Ofori-Atta’s legal team should “call his bluff” and not cooperate with a process that, in his view, seeks to criminalize individuals outside the law.

Agyepong also questioned the OSP’s past conduct, referencing the prosecutor’s previous decision to operate from abroad due to alleged threats against his life. “If he could work outside the country at our expense, then he can equally reach Ken,” he said.

The former NPP General Secretary, while affirming his support for accountability, warned against what he called “Rambo-style invasions” under the guise of investigations.

“I want all who have misconducted themselves in government to face the full consequences of their actions — but in a lawful, dignified way. Not through politically motivated tactics that undermine the rule of law,” he stressed.

Ending his statement on a note of party solidarity, Agyepong declared: “We, the people, will not condone any moves calculated to further damage our party’s brand on the altar of political expediency. Period.”
