Ace Ghanaian journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has expressed shock and confusion over the decision to downgrade Ghana’s Republic Day and subsequently declare it a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
According to him, the move is not only baffling but also undermines the significance of the day.
“How does anybody explain that? How could anybody, any leader of Ghana, any government of Ghana, come to that conclusion? It just beats me,” he stated on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday, July 2.
Kwesi Pratt noted that the decision to downgrade the Republic Day is particularly surprising given that the same leaders are claiming credit for Ghana’s independence.
“Development does not come through prayers and thanksgiving alone,” he emphasized, questioning the effectiveness of such initiatives.
“Why couldn’t we have the prayers and thanksgiving on the Friday which is a holiday, why do we have Tuesday for the prayers and thanksgiving?” he asked.
Instead of prayers and thanksgiving, the seasoned journalist suggests that Republic Day could be used more productively.
“Let it have meaning in our life, shouldn’t this be the day where our youth are re-mobilized, encouraged and organized to visit historical sites, to learn about our histories, to know the impact of our history?” he proposed.
He cited examples of how holidays can be used productively, such as organizing school trips to historical sites like Elmina and Cape Coast castles, hosting symposia and lectures, or conducting clean-up campaigns.
“Most of the holidays are a complete waste,” he lamented, emphasizing the need for more meaningful celebrations.
