Tensions are rising in the Eastern Region following a dramatic rejection of the President’s nominee for the Abuakwa South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position by the Akyem Abuakwa Council of Zongo Chiefs and allied youth groups.
At a press conference held in Kyebi, the traditional seat of the Akyem Abuakwa area, Zongo community leaders voiced their outrage over the selection of Nana Addo Aikins Jnr., describing the appointment as a betrayal of loyal grassroots members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Chief Alhaji Abubakar Umar, the Kyebi Zongo Chief and President of the Akyem Abuakwa Council of Zongo Chiefs, led the charge against the nomination. In an impassioned address, he denounced the move as “a stab in the back” to Zongo communities that have supported the NDC through thick and thin.
“We have stood by the party for decades, sacrificing, organizing, and building its foundation in this region. To be overlooked in this manner is deeply painful,” said Chief Umar, who struggled to hold back tears as he addressed the press.
Central to the community’s dissatisfaction is the exclusion of Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed, a long-time NDC stalwart and respected figure in the Zongo community. Alhaji Sanusi, who has served as a constituency chairman and parliamentary candidate in multiple elections, was widely expected to be the natural choice for the MCE position.
“This is not just about Sanusi Mohammed,” said Abdul Raman Kafando, convener of the concerned youth group. “This is about the continued marginalization of the Zongo people, our voice, and our rightful place in the party’s leadership structure.”
Kafando warned that ignoring the concerns of Zongo communities could have serious political repercussions, particularly with general elections on the horizon.
Despite the deep frustration expressed at the event, Chief Umar urged restraint, calling on the youth to channel their grievances peacefully. “We are angry, but we are also disciplined. Let our voices be heard through lawful means. We expect the party to do the right thing.”
