Over one thousand direct employees are on the verge of losing their jobs due to an attempt by some traditional rulers to sell portions of the land belonging to Panbros Salt Industries Limited, one of the oldest Ghanaian indigenous companies to Chinese investors.
Out of desperation workers of Panbros Salt Industries Limited clad in red, and black staged a demonstration in the quest to protect their livelihoods.
At the company’s site which has existed since 1958 and currently provides direct jobs to one thousand employees, massive filling activities are being done by the Chinese who have allegedly acquired the land from some traditional leaders to establish a roofing sheet factory.
Some of the workers who spoke to Metro News called on relevant authorities to intervene to protect their livelihoods.
Leadership of the local workers union cannot comprehend why the state is failing to protect the company even though Ghana is said to be importing USD 1.2 million dollars annually.
They want the government to as a matter of urgency intervene to insulate the company from possible collapse.
Not even various complaints filed with the police have led to any sign of protecting this Indigenous firm.
Productivity has dwindled significantly as the company’s salt-washing plant has completely become inaccessible.
Managing Director Michael Odartey Wellington told Metro News that apart from the company risking a loss of its investments, the activities of encroachers will also cause flooding in areas such as Dansoman, Malam Junction, and Malam Market since wetlands that were reserved by the company have all been encroached upon, and filled to construct residential facilities.
