Ghanaian artist Guru credits his 2011 hit “Lapaz Toyota” with reviving his career, landing his first record deal, and turning his life around after industry struggles.
In an interview with Nana Romeo, Guru recalled how earlier tracks like “Kasiebo” and “Democracy” weren’t enough to sustain momentum.
“After those, it was tough I was struggling and might’ve quit music,” he said.”Lapaz Toyota changed everything,” Guru shared. “It took me to the big leagues, built my brand, and got me my first label deal.”
“Lapaz Toyota was the song that took me to where the successful people were. It established my brand. After Kasiebo and Democracy, it was very difficult to produce another hit. I was really struggling and might have left the music scene early, but Lapaz Toyota changed everything; it even earned me my first record label deal”, he said.
The song’s success also boosted his personal life, letting him support family and friends.
