Lassa Fever Outbreak: 12 Additional Cases Confirmed – Ghana Health Service

Twelve (12) additional cases of the deadly Lassa Fever disease have been confirmed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

This brings the total confirmed cases of the outbreak to fourteen (14) after two cases were initially confirmed by the Health Authorities on February 26th, 2023.

In a statement released by the Ghana Health Service, the 12 new cases were identified as a result of the activation of Public Health Emergence Response at all levels which conducted a contact tracing exercise to contain the community spread of the virus.

All the 12 cases, including the already existing case, according to GHS are alive and stable adding that they are under strict management at various designated hospitals.

Meanwhile, 97 contacts have been traced so far as efforts are being intensified to expand the tracing exercise.

The Health Service is therefore urging the public to observe all the preventive measure.

Among a number of measures, the public are advised to avoid contact with rodents (mice, rats etc), ensure good environment hygiene and institute measures such as storing grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, disposing of garbage far from home, maintaining clean housing and keeping cats to prevent rodent infestation. In addition, the public should avoid contact with blood and body fluids while caring for sick persons.

“The Ghana Health Service wishes to remind the public of the need to report to the nearest health facilities when unwell. We want to assure the public that we will continue to work with partners to ensure the safety the entire population,” parts of the statement read.
