Ghanaian boxer, Clement Ike Quartey has sadly passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024, in the United Kingdom, as confirmed by the Ghana Boxing Federation.
The legendary boxer, who competed in the Light welterweight division, died at the age of 86 on Saturday morning, with the cause of his death not yet disclosed.
Quartey’s career was marked by numerous significant achievements, including several national titles and international bouts that showcased his talent on a global scale. He was not only admired for his athletic ability but also for his commitment to promoting boxing in Ghana and inspiring young athletes.
Clement Ike Quartey holds the distinction of being the first African and Ghanaian to win a medal at the Olympic Games in any sport, securing silver at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. He also claimed a gold medal at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games held in Perth, Western Australia.
Clement Quartey was the elder brother of former world champion (WBA welterweight), Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey.
