The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sudan at the Benina Martyrs Stadium in Libya during the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, putting their hopes of qualifying for the tournament in jeopardy.
Ghana went into the game in dire need of a win, having picked just two points from their first three matches in Group F, which included a loss to Angola and draws with Niger and Sudan.
The first half ended without any goals, with Ghana controlling more of the play but failing to create any real opportunity. Sudan looked dangerous on the counter and threatened Ghana on a few occasions.
After the break, Ghana came out with renewed energy and nearly took the lead just minutes into the half when Inaki Williams scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Despite Ghana dominating possession, it was Sudan who struck first in the 60th minute when Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud capitalized on a mix-up in the Ghana defense to score.
Just three minutes later, Sudan doubled their advantage and rounded the game off as Mohamed Abdelrahman outpaced Mohammed Salisu and slid the ball past Lawrence Ati Zigi.
This 2-0 defeat leaves Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for AFCON hanging by a thread, as they now have just two points from four matches. Ghana will need to win their remaining two games and hope Sudan loses both of theirs.
