Ghana’s National Press Freedom Day celebrations in Koforidua have ended with a call to media practitioners to revive their campaign against irresponsible mining.
Ghana Journalists Association President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour warned that the country’s vegetative cover will continue to dwindle if effective measures are not taken to address illegal mining.
The celebrations, themed “Leveraging Journalism for a Sustainable Environment and Future”, emphasized the importance of press freedom in upholding democracy.
Mr. Dwumfour commended journalists for their contributions to Ghana’s development and announced that the country’s World Press Freedom ranking had improved from 62nd to 50th.
He condemned the recent petrol bomb attack on Class Media Group in Accra and praised the Ghana Journalists Association’s executives for their effective role in promoting press freedom.
Information Minister-Designate Fatimatu Abubarka reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding media safety and security, while Eastern Regional Minister Seth Acheampong acknowledged the media’s role in democratic dispensation and denounced attacks on journalists.
Environmental Protection Agency Executive Director John Kingsley Krugu and New Juaben Traditional Area Omanhene Dasebre Kwaku Boateng also addressed the ceremony, urging responsible reporting and environmental stewardship.
