Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin says the controversial Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly known as the LGBTQ+ Bill, will soon return to Parliament.
He told Members of Parliament that the bill will be reintroduced for consideration since all unfinished business from the previous Parliament has expired.
The Speaker made the clarification after some MPs from both sides of the House argued over whether the bill had already been passed by the eighth Parliament or still required fresh introduction in the current one.
“The eighth Parliament is history, and all its pending business has ended,” Mr Bagbin ruled, adding that the LGBTQ+ Bill would be brought before the current, ninth Parliament.
He made the remarks after Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga briefed him on proceedings in the House during his absence.
The LGBTQ+ Bill, which seeks to criminalise same-sex relations and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, has generated heated debate within and outside Parliament since it was first introduced.
