Light Foundation CEO calls for urgent gov’t intervention in Nangbagu Water crisis

The Chief Executive Officer of The Light Foundation, Sheikh Abubakar Ali Napari, has issued a passionate appeal to government authorities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to urgently intervene in the worsening water crisis affecting residents of Nangbagu in the Tolon District of the Northern Region.

The Nangbagu community, made up of two settlements —Nangbagu Napala and Nangbagu Yakura —has, for years, been plagued by the absence of potable drinking water. Residents, including children and the elderly, are forced to trek long distances daily in search of water.

The only stream that once served as a lifeline for the people and their livestock has completely dried up, worsening the already dire situation.

Speaking in an interview with Metro News, Sheikh Napari expressed deep concern after visiting the community. He described the living conditions as “alarming and unacceptable” and emphasized that no Ghanaian community should endure such hardship in this modern era.

“It is deeply worrying that a community with such a population is not only without clean drinking water but also lacks basic sanitation facilities like toilets,” Sheikh Napari said.

“The stream they relied on has dried up, and this is not just a water issue — it’s a matter of public health and human dignity.”

He further called on the government, development partners, and benevolent organizations to help by providing mechanized boreholes to support the community’s survival.

According to the Sheikh, the provision of sustainable water sources is not a luxury but a necessity for Nangbagu’s residents to live with dignity.
