Maame Tiwaa of Asomafo fame dead

Ghanaian Gospel singer Maame Tiwaa, a long serving member of the Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo group, has died.

She passed away in the early hours of Sunday after battling an illness for several weeks.

Family members and close associates confirmed her death, describing the moment as a heavy blow to the Gospel music community. Her voice, warm and commanding, shaped the sound that made Yaw Sarpong and his team household names across the country.

For more than forty years, Maame Tiwaa was a central force within the Asomafo group. Her stirring delivery and deep emotional expression brought life to many of the songs that became part of the nation’s spiritual journey. Those who worked closely with her often spoke of her complete devotion to the craft and her steady dedication to Yaw Sarpong, whom she supported throughout nearly her entire career.

Her decades of work were recently acknowledged when she earned her first major industry nomination, a recognition many felt was long overdue for a woman whose influence had quietly shaped generations of Gospel music lovers.

Born in Domeabra in the Ahafo area, Maame Tiwaa started singing as a child. By the age of ten she had already shown promise, a talent that caught the attention of Reverend Yaw Sarpong. Together they built the Asomafo band, a group that would later define authentic live Gospel performance in Ghana.

Her death marks the end of a treasured era for fans who grew up listening to her voice. Colleagues, musicians, and worship leaders have begun sharing messages of grief and gratitude, remembering her as a gentle spirit whose music carried both strength and comfort.
