Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration for what he described as discriminatory practices in the distribution of infrastructure development across the country.
Speaking to supporters in Mampong, Ashanti Region, Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the upcoming elections, highlighted the stark contrast between his government and the current administration.
Mahama recalled that during his tenure as Vice President under the late President John Atta Mills, he was instrumental in securing funds from India for development projects, including water supply for the Mampong community. He emphasized that the water system, which continues to serve the people of Mampong to this day, was part of a broader, inclusive development strategy that aimed to benefit all Ghanaians, regardless of their location or political affiliation.
“When I was Vice President in 2016, I was sent to India and successfully secured funding for various development projects. Part of that funding was specifically earmarked for providing water to Mampong, and it continues to serve the community,” Mahama said, reflecting on the NDC’s approach to nationwide development.
According to Mahama, the NDC government focused on equitable development, ensuring that infrastructure such as electricity, water, and roads reached every community, irrespective of political lines.
He stated that no community or constituency was left behind under the NDC’s governance.
In contrast, Mahama accused the ruling NPP government of deliberately neglecting certain areas, creating a divide in the distribution of developmental resources. He argued that the current government has engaged in discriminatory practices, favoring certain regions and constituencies over others, which he believes has stifled the country’s overall progress.
“The NPP has been in power for eight years, and during this time, we have witnessed a clear discrimination in the sharing of development projects. The NPP has failed to ensure that every community gets a fair share of infrastructure,” Mahama claimed, asserting that the NDC remains the party best equipped to deliver impartial, inclusive development to all Ghanaians.
Mahama’s comments were met with enthusiasm from the crowd, as he reiterated the NDC’s commitment to providing sustainable development for all parts of the country, with a focus on fairness, equality, and shared prosperity.
In his closing remarks, Mahama promised that under an NDC government, no community would be left behind in the pursuit of development, and that infrastructure projects would be allocated based on need and not political affiliation.
“As we approach the 2024 elections, it is clear that the NDC is the only party that can deliver development without discrimination. We will ensure that all Ghanaians, regardless of their location or political persuasion, benefit from the progress we make as a country,” Mahama concluded.
