Mahama charges National Peace Council to build public trust

President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the reconstituted Governing Board of the National Peace Council to go the extra mile in building public trust to sustain Ghana’s peace and development.

Speaking after inaugurating the board on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the need for the council to rise above partisanship and resist manipulation.

The President urged the council to deepen its collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC), National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), traditional and religious authorities.

He also stressed the importance of institutionalizing pre-election dialogue platforms to promote peace and stability.

President Mahama specifically called on the National Peace Council to complement ongoing mediation talks to secure a lasting solution to chieftaincy disputes, particularly the protracted Bawku conflict.

He noted that violence in Bawku has claimed numerous lives and displaced several households, emphasizing the need for the council to work assiduously to maintain Ghana’s image as an oasis of peace in the sub-region.

Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, highlighted the council’s plans to thoroughly review the 2024 elections and adopt strategies for effective cooperation to build a resilient future.

He also announced Ghana’s readiness to chair and host the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC).

The National Peace Council is an independent statutory national peace institution established by Act 818 of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana to prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts and build sustainable peace.
