President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the assault on Carlos Calony, a JoyNews journalist, by military personnel during the coverage of a warehouse demolition reportedly owned by McDan Group Ltd on July 30, 2025.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of four deputy ministers at the Jubilee House, President Mahama expressed deep concern over rising incidents of media intimidation. He condemned the mistreatment of journalists by security forces and pledged immediate steps to safeguard press freedom.
He announced that a thorough investigation will be launched into the recent attack, assuring that any officers found culpable will face disciplinary action.
President Mahama also revealed plans to hold a special meeting between the heads of the security services and the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). As part of broader reforms, a nationwide training program will be introduced to sensitize security personnel on the rights of journalists and the importance of media freedom.
Reaffirming his commitment to democratic values, President Mahama emphasized that a free and responsible press is essential to national development.
“Journalists must be seen as partners in progress, not adversaries,” he stated.
