President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep gratitude to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for playing a decisive role in shaping his political journey, including persuading him to become the running mate of the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills at a time when he had considered quitting politics altogether.
Recounting the pivotal moment during a visit to the Manhyia Palace, President Mahama said he received a call from someone who simply said, “Otumfuo wants you in Manhyia.” That invitation, he revealed, would change the course of his life and Ghanaian politics.
“It was Otumfuo’s words that convinced me to accept the offer to run with Prof. Mills. I had already made up my mind to retire from politics,” Mahama said.
He praised the Asantehene as “a national icon of peace and visionary leadership,” highlighting his instrumental role in resolving chieftaincy disputes and promoting national unity.
In recognition of the region’s significance and the strong ties between Manhyia and the presidency, President Mahama pledged to complete several key infrastructure projects in the Ashanti Region. These include:
Completion of the Maternity and Children’s Block at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) — a long-delayed but crucial facility to improve maternal and child health in northern Ghana.
Finishing the Accra–Kumasi Highway, one of Ghana’s busiest and most vital transport corridors, to boost trade and mobility.
Expansion of Kumasi International Airport, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and attracting international investment.
Delivery of the Kumasi City Traffic Programme, to reduce congestion and improve urban transportation systems.
Construction of Two Military Hospitals in the region to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve readiness for national emergencies.
President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive national development, promising that the Ashanti Region would remain central to Ghana’s progress.
“This is not about politics; it is about legacy, service, and nation-building,” the President stated.
