Mahama defends Deputy BoG Governor Matilda Asante-Asiedu’s appointment amid criticisms

President John Dramani Mahama has come to the defense of Matilda Asante-Asiedu, the newly appointed Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, amid criticisms questioning her qualifications.

Speaking at her swearing-in ceremony on Friday, May 2, 2025, President Mahama emphasized her proven track record and the strategic timing of her appointment.

President Mahama described her appointment as “pivotal” to his administration’s vision of restoring professionalism and public trust in key state institutions.

“This event is more than just a procedural formality,” he said. “It reflects our collective resolve to restore professionalism, integrity, and competence to one of our nation’s most important institutions.”

President Mahama shared an anecdote about receiving messages questioning her appointment, particularly her background in corporate communications.

However, upon sharing her CV with a critic, the President recounted, “He texted back saying, ‘I’m sorry. All the while you were at Access Bank, they thought you were doing corporate communications. They didn’t realize you had transitioned fully into core banking.'”

President Mahama expressed confidence in Matilda Asante-Asiedu’s capabilities, highlighting her skills in stakeholder management and financial inclusion.

“She brings a proven track record in stakeholder management and financial inclusion,” he stated, adding that her appointment “comes at a defining moment.”
