Mahama directs demolition of structures on waterways to combat flooding in Accra

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Greater Accra Regional Minister and relevant development agencies to demolish structures obstructing waterways in the region.

This directive comes after a recent inspection of ongoing drainage works and flood-prone areas in the Accra metropolis.

During his tour, President Mahama visited several key sites, including the Abufo Achimota Bridge, Mallam Junction, and Odawna at Circle, all areas heavily impacted by flooding.

His visit was part of a broader effort to address the city’s longstanding flooding issues.

A key focus of the president’s inspection was the Accra Academy main drain system, with Mahama stressing the urgency of accelerating its completion to alleviate flooding in neighborhoods such as Kaneshie, Bubuashie, and surrounding areas.

The project aims to reduce the risk of seasonal floods that have repeatedly affected these communities.

The company currently filling up the ramseyer site/water retention basin at Mallam Junction is Caitec Motors. In response to the President’s directive, the military will support the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to ensure that the company desilts the built-up area and clears any obstructions.

Additionally, efforts will be made to ensure that structures built in waterways across other parts of the city are removed.

In addition to the infrastructural work, the President called on residents to take personal responsibility in preventing flooding.

He urged them to avoid littering, which often clogs drains and exacerbates flooding during heavy rains.

With the rainy season fast approaching, Mahama also urged Dredge Master, the company responsible for clearing the city’s drains, to expedite their operations to ensure the city’s drainage system can effectively handle the expected rainfall.
