Mahama has no time to go after ‘someone like’ Abronye – Beatrice Annan

A presidential staffer, Beatrice Annan, has dismissed claims that the government is behind the arrest and remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, September 15, 2025, Ms. Beatrice Annan said the government has more pressing issues to deal with than pursuing critics.

“Abronye is nobody in the scheme of things for government. If we had anybody to worry about, if government had somebody to, I don’t think that anybody would waste their time on someone like Abronye,” she said.

According to her, President John Mahama and his ministers are focused on addressing economic challenges and creating jobs for young people.

“We are in the process of fixing the country, the country that they so led into the abyss. We recognise that there are very germane matters, bread and butter issues. Young people can’t find jobs. The discussion is how to expand for young people to find jobs,” she added.

Ms. Annan argued that claims of government interference in the judiciary are unfounded, recalling how the NDC had previously cautioned against such practices.

“Eight months down the line, the NPP cannot even stand one percent of the things that everybody was trying to caution them against – that do not interfere with the judiciary, do not call judges like the Attorney General was doing, do not have the judiciary at your beck and call,” she said.

She stressed that President Mahama is not concerned about Abronye despite his frequent criticisms.

“As of yesterday when I counted, Abronye has insulted President Mahama more than 89 times… But President Mahama is not interested, government is not interested in somebody like him,” she noted.

Citing past examples, Ms. Annan said Mr. Mahama has a record of tolerating even his fiercest critics.

“You would recall how Manasseh practically created a profession by publicising a lot of false news about President Mahama. His life has never been under threat. You recall A-Plus in the lead up to the 2016 election practically using words you can’t repeat on President Mahama,” she said.

She insisted that government’s focus remains on development and not on silencing individuals.
