Mahama indicates readiness to assent to anti-LGBTQ bill when passed

President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has affirmed that he will give presidential assent to the anti-LGBTQ bill once it is duly considered and approved by Parliament.

President Mahama made the pledge at the Jubilee House on Tuesday during an engagement with the Christian Council of Ghana, where discussions centred on national values and ongoing legislative matters.

According to him, the Executive and the Christian community shared similar perspectives on the subject and emphasised that the legislative process must run its full course.

He said that should Parliament review the proposal, make any necessary revisions, and subsequently vote to approve it, he would have no reservation in signing the bill into law.

His comments come on the heels of a directive by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who on October 28 ruled that the bill must be laid afresh in the Ninth Parliament.

According to Speaker Bagbin, all unfinished business from the dissolved Eighth Parliament lapsed, making reintroduction necessary.

Following the ruling, the anti-LGBTQ bill has been brought back before the House as a private member’s bill, led by Sam Nartey George, Ningo-Prampram lawmaker, together with a group of co-sponsors.
