President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new PET Scan facility at the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre in Accra, describing it as a major step towards improving specialist healthcare in Ghana.
The President said the advanced diagnostic centre would help improve early cancer detection and treatment while reducing the number of Ghanaians forced to travel abroad for specialist medical care. He added that the facility could also help position Ghana as a medical hub in West Africa.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr Mahama said the investment marked an important milestone in Ghana’s efforts to achieve world class healthcare delivery and strengthen what he described as the country’s medical sovereignty.

He commended the Ghana National Association of Teachers and the management of the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre for what he called their visionary investment in the health sector.
Mr Mahama also announced a number of government interventions in healthcare, education and housing.
They include plans for new regional hospitals, additional catheterisation laboratories for cardiac care, and housing projects for teachers.
The President also highlighted the government’s 300 million dollar STARR J initiative, which he said is expected to help end the double track system in secondary schools by 2027.
He said improving healthcare, education and the welfare of teachers remained central to the country’s national development agenda.
